One of Colorado's most respected directors of photography, Gary Otte brings 13 years of shooting and lighting experience to your set—wherever in the nation (or the world) you happen to be.
Passionate creativity and focused hard work have propelled Gary to the top of the local scene and have put him in demand nationally, taking him as far away as Sudan (to date …).
"Everything starts with lighting," says Gary, who is known in part for his instinctual, skilled lighting expertise. Yet, surprisingly, this respected DP got his calculated start in sports, where he worked up to shooting for the Denver Broncos. "The whole thought behind that was to improve my shooting skills—make split-second decisions—and getting into trusting instincts and being able to anticipate," he says.
When shooting features and other projects, Gary combines this instinctual ability with a meticulous attention to detail and a constant focus on the story. He asks himself what works best for this particular movie—for this particular scene. "Every shot is an effects shot, whether it's a static on a tripod or a jib with a dolly," Gary says. "It all depends on what the story is saying right at that moment in time."
The most commonly heard word around Gary's monitors: "Wow." Experienced,
professional, creative, instinctual, meticulous, Gary Otte will make your project
glow—
or not … depending on the scene.
